George Smith and Pat McCabe could both still feature for Australia against the British and Irish Lions this summer after scans revealed their injuries were not as bad as first feared.

The ACT Brumbies pair were omitted from the Wallabies' 25-man preliminary squad, but coach Robbie Deans will add six players when he names his final line-up on June 10.

Veteran flanker Smith sustained a medial ligament injury playing for the Brumbies last weekend and has been ruled out for six weeks, which could see him return in time for the second Test against the Lions in Melbourne on June 28.

Lions ready to roar

"Originally it was feared Smith's Australian season was over, but medical advice was confident on Tuesday that wasn't the case," read a statement from the Brumbies.

Smith said: "My priority from here is to rest, rehab and ensure my body is 100 percent leading into the tail end of the Brumbies season."

Centre McCabe injured his knee in the 28-22 defeat to the Waratahs, but scans showed no structural damage and he is expected to return for the Brumbies' clash with the Hurricanes on May 31.

"It's a matter of this swelling settling down and then I can start running and it won't be much longer. I'm almost walking normally now," said McCabe.
