British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has admitted England and Harlequins captain Chris Robshaw was unlucky to miss out on selection of this summer's tour of Australia.

The 26-year-old was not named in the Tuesday's squad announcement with the likes of Tom Croft, Justin Tipuric, Dan Lydiate, Sam Warburton and Sean O'Brien winning places in Warren Gatland's team.

Farrell believes Robshaw has impressed for England in Six Nations duty, but he knows that only so many players can be included on the tour in order for everyone to get a fair crack of the whip.

"It's unbelievably tough. Chris (Robshaw) has had a tremendous season," he told Sky Sports. "Man-of-the-match performances for his country and led England superbly well and had some great form.

"The position is a tough as it gets. Unfortunately on the tour you can't keep going and going with numbers as much as you'd like to. You have to keep the numbers down so that it is sufficient for everyone gets a chance.

"There's got to be a cut-off somewhere. There are lots of really class players that will be disappointed."

Class

It had been suggested some England players failed to make the cut due to their 30-3 hammering by Wales in their Six Nations decider, although it is a notion Farrell has refuted.

"I suppose you don't take it on one game. There are guys that have come back from injury that have had limited amount of game time, but has shown their class," he continued.

"You never take into isolation as far as selection is concerned. You go with what you know and as a coaching group I think we've got some experience in the four nations and everyone has their say. It's such a talented squad and a very exciting one to be involved with as a coach.

"Chris (Robshaw) has had a tremendous season. Man of the match performances for his country and led England superbly well and had some great form."

"Now that the selection is done and dusted we can get on with preparations for Australia. The Australians, their side has been together for a while and we need to get up-to-speed rugby wise as soon as possible."

Quiet

One player who did make the cut is Saracens' Owen Farrell and the former Wigan Warriors man admitted it was tough not telling his son that he would be going to Australia.

When asked if Owen was kept in the dark, he replied: "We did. It's important to make sure that he goes through the pain like everyone else. Everyone was walking around like a caged tiger waiting to hear the news.

"It's right and proper that he feels the same as everyone else. Good or bad news. That is what people have got to deal with along the way.

"I suppose he would have liked some inside information, but it wasn't coming from his father."
