Wales are unlikely to have Ospreys wing Eli Walker available for their summer tour of Japan after he had back surgery.

The 20-year-old had been struggling with a back injury for some time and his club confirmed he had gone under the knife on Tuesday.

Walker has been one of the most lethal finishers in the RaboDirect PRO12 this season and had also made his way into the Wales squad.

With George North and Alex Cuthbert likely to be named in Warren Gatland's Lions squad, Walker was expected to be a strong challenger for a starting place in the two-Test tour to Japan in June.

Ospreys head physiotherapist Chris Towers said: "Eli hasn't shown any improvement following conservative treatment of his back issue, so having taking expert advice he underwent an operation to correct the problem on Tuesday.

"Experience of dealing with similar issues suggests that he will be out of action for around 10 to 12 weeks."
