Newport Gwent-Dragons ran in 11 tries as they walloped Bucharest Wolves 69-17 at Rodney Parade to go top of Pool 3 in the European Challenge Cup.

The Guinness PRO12 side took full advantage of Newcastle losing their unbeaten record by Stade Francais on Thursday night to leapfrog their rivals from the Aviva Premiership.

The try-scoring bonus point - which was secured after just 24 minutes on Friday - was enough to move them on to 16 points, one ahead of Newcastle.

Bucharest actually drew first blood, with a try for Vali-Catalin Mototolea in the seventh minute, but shortly after that Newport openside Nick Cudd dotted down and then the floodgates opened.

Tries from Ross Wardle, Hallam Amos, Jonathan Evans and a brace from Tom Prydie gave them a formidable 38-7 lead at the interval.

Rhys M Thomas crashed over to get it on the fun and then Prydie completed his hat-trick, before there was finally some signs of life again from the visitors as Florin Surugiu crossed over around the hour-mark.

Andrew Coombs added another Newport try before winger Ionut Botezatu grabbed a third for the Romanians, but substitute Luc Jones and Rhys Jones - who also kicked seven conversions - finished things off for the hosts.

Elsewhere, Lyon closed the gap behind Bordeaux-Begles in Pool Four to just one point as they beat their Top14 rivals 37-28 at Matmut Stadium.

Romain Loursac scored two of Lyon's tries and Jerome Porical denied Bordeaux-Begles a losing bonus point with a late penalty.
