Newport Gwent Dragons have parted company with head coach Darren Edwards with immediate effect.

Edwards, a former scrum-half with London Irish, Newport, Bedford, London Welsh and Leeds Carnegie, took charge of the Dragons in 2011 following a two-year stint as backs coach at Rodney Parade.

He departs with the Dragons sitting in seventh place in the RaboDirect PRO12 table with six wins from their 14 matches this season.

Edwards said: "After five seasons, my time with the Dragons has come to an end. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here working with some fantastic players.

"In professional sport it is important that you continue to challenge yourself and develop, and I have decided that now is the time for me to do that."

Dragons rugby director Lyn Jones added: "As a former Newport RFC player, he has brought a lot of experience to the role of head coach at the Dragons.

"Personally, I have enjoyed his company and working alongside him. Everyone at the Dragons wishes him well for the future."
