The Ospreys have announced that flanker Sam Lewis has signed a new deal, just two days after Newport Gwent Dragons claimed the 23-year-old would be joining them.

In a New Year's Day statement, Dragons' rugby director Lyn Jones said Lewis would be "a significant signing" for the club.

But the Ospreys website announced on Friday that: "Despite reports elsewhere announcing a move to Newport Gwent Dragons, Sam Lewis has committed his future to the Ospreys.

"Lewis, who has played 42 games for the region, has signed a two-year deal that runs until the end of the 2015/16 season."

And Lewis himself said: "I am 100 per cent committed to the Ospreys and I'd like to apologise for any confusion caused by recent statements, which coincided with a brief period of uncertainty on my part.

"However, I have signed a two-year contract to stay here at the Ospreys and I look forward to continuing to represent my home region, as I continue to develop on and off the field."

Lewis' decision to stay means Ospreys have plenty of strength in depth in the back row, and he will compete for playing time with the likes of Wales internationals Ryan Jones and Justin Tipuric.
