The Scarlets have bolstered their second row options with the signing of South African Johan Snyman.

The 26-year-old lock arrives from the Eastern Province Kings on a three-year contract and is expected to arrive in Llanelli within a month.

Scarlets head coach Simon Easterby was keen to capture another second row to add to summer recruits George Earle, Tomas Vallejos and Jake Ball.

Snyman's signing is the Scarlets' seventh of the summer, with prop Jacobie Adriaanse and former Ospreys Kristian Phillips and Gareth Owen also joining the region.

"To compete at the top end of Europe, we need strength, power and consistency from our pack and the ability to deliver at a high level in set-piece play," said Easterby.

"This is another key signing for us and we're delighted to have secured Joe to join us at Parc y Scarlets.

"We made a commitment last season to recruit in key areas and with our new signings we are also mindful of the impact they will have on the development of players we have coming up through our system.

"It also adds to the healthy level of competition within our squad which will further drive and motivate performance across the squad.

"Different experiences and input from players in the southern hemisphere can only have a positive impact and add to the energy here."

Snyman has had spells with the Cheetahs, Sharks and Lions, and also represented South Africa at youth level.
