Munster captain Doug Howlett has announced his retirement from rugby union on medical advice.

The 34-year-old winger was in talks over a new deal with the province when he hurt his shoulder at the end of March and doctors have told him not to try and launch another comeback.

Howlett joined Munster in January 2008 and played a key role in the Heineken Cup success later that season - he retires with more than 100 caps and is Munster's second leading try-scorer with 35.

He became just the second overseas player and the first back to be named squad captain at the start of the current season.

Howlett has intimated that he will stay in Cork for the time being where he lives with his wife and three children.

The former All Black joins a long list of players leaving Munster at the end of the season, which also includes Peter Stringer, Marcus Horan, Sean Scanlon, Sean Henry, Wian du Preez, Scott Deasy and Christy Condon.
