European Rugby Challenge Cup: Cardiff Blues beat Grenoble, London Welsh and Exeter lose

Cardiff Blues kicked off their European Rugby Challenge Cup campaign with a 37-14 bonus-point victory over Grenoble in Pool 1.

Rhys Patchell and Lloyd Williams scored first-half tries for the Blues at Cardiff Arms Park before Sam Warburton, Richard Smith and Josh Turnbull followed suit after the interval.

Patchell converted three of Cardiff's five tries and added two penalties for a match haul of 17 points.

Louis Marrou scored Grenoble's only try three minutes from time and James Hart also slotted three penalties for the visitors.

In Pool 4, London Welsh's dreadful start to the season continued as they were beaten 28-18 by Lyon.

Welsh, who are yet to win an Aviva Premiership match in six attempts this season, were outscored by four tries to two by their French rivals.

Lyon, who were promoted to the Top 14 after winning the Pro D2 last season, claimed victory courtesy of tries from Ricky Januarie, Fabrice Estebanez, Franck Romanet and Waisele Sukanaveita, while Jerome Porical converted all four scores.

Chris Elder and James Lewis scored first-half tries for Welsh and Tristan Roberts added a conversion and two penalties, but they left the Matmut Stadium empty-handed.

Connacht win

Connacht bettered Cardiff's try haul by two in their 48-12 victory over La Rochelle.

The Irish side ran in seven tries in a clinical performance in Galway, with Robbie Henshaw (two), Jack Carty, Kieran Marmion, Ronan Loughney, Danie Poolman and Matt Healy all crossing the whitewash during the Pool 2 encounter.

Craig Ronaldson and Ian Porter combined to convert five of Connacht's tries while Ronaldson also slotted a penalty. Damien Cler and replacement Charles Lagarde scored consolation tries for La Rochelle.

Newport Gwent Dragons made a winning start to Pool 3 action with an impressive 38-22 victory at Stade Francais.

Richie Rees, Rhys Thomas, Hallam Amos and Nic Cudd touched down for Newport tries, while Angus O'Brien made sure the points were going back to south-east Wales with three conversions and four penalties.

Vincent Mallet slotted five penalties for the French side, before Morne Steyn converted Meyer Bosman's 60th-minute try.

A late try from Lisiate Fa'aoso gave Bayonne a 30-24 win against Exeter in Pool 2.

The Basque side also scored tries through Opeti Fonua and Pierre Sayerse, while Christophe Loustalot kicked 15 points.

Adam Hughes and Carl Rimmer crossed for tries and Ceri Sweeney and Jack Arnott kicked 14 points between them in a losing cause for Exeter.
