Glasgow boss Gregor Townsend was disappointed that his side did not take their chances as they were beaten 12-9 by Toulouse on Saturday.

In tricky conditions the game came down to the battle of the boot as Toulouse scrum-half Nicolas Bezy booting two in the first half and two more after the break.

Finn Russell was not so clinical for Glasgow, spurning a pair of decent chances, and it took a pair of late penalties from replacement Duncan Weir to make it a tense finish.

“It was a game where tries were not really going to be scored with two very good defences in tricky conditions so getting penalties was going to make a big difference,” said Townsend.

"The effort was there in a game that never really kicked off. However a mixture of the quality of the opposition, their excellent defence and our errors, particularly handling, left us just short.

“I am disappointed; we were not at our best today and when you come up against a team like Toulouse you need to be at your best. We only showed that in patches.

“Rugby is a contestable game; there are a lot of laws within the game and some are refereed more strongly than others. It is frustrating but we have got to make sure we play within the laws.

“Obviously we will have to play really well and win our  two remaining games – it is going to be tough, but I think us and Bath still have an outside chance of getting through.”

No easy games

Toulouse forwards coach William Servat played down any suggestion that Toulouse now have a straightforward path to the quarter-finals.

"We saw last night how well Bath played in beating Montpellier and we were lucky to beat them in game one.

"We know the quality of the players and staff at Montpellier and when they sort out their current problems that match will be really hard. Indeed the last two games will be harder than the four up to now."
