Brian O'Driscoll will be fit for Ireland's Six Nations campaign after finally shaking off his ankle injury.

The Ireland and Lions star has not played since the end of October when he injured his ankle playing against Cardiff Blues.

He missed Ireland's entire autumn international programme and it had been feared he could also miss the Six Nations.

But Leinster coach Joe Schmidt confirmed that the centre could make his comeback in the RaboDirect PRO12 match with Edinburgh on 4 January, along with fellow fit-again Ireland internationals Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald.

"We'd be confident of Brian O'Driscoll, Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald getting back for Edinburgh," Schmidt said.

O'Driscoll, meanwhile, has ended speculation that he may finish his career abroad.

He had previously expressed an interest in playing in the Super 15 but he told the Irish Independent: "In terms of Super 15 that ship has well and truly passed. It was just said tongue-in-cheek. Maybe at 33 I should know better than to be throwing those comments out there.

"If I do play for another few years (after) next year, it will definitely be with the one team, my number one team, Leinster."
