Paul O'Connell has been sidelined until the new year due to an ongoing back injury.

Munster confirmed the Ireland second row will return to see a specialist next year in relation to a lower back problem that has hindered his season.

O'Connell has not appeared in the team since the Heineken Cup round 2 game against Edinburgh at Thomond Park Stadium in October.

Although being involved in Irish squad training during the November internationals, Munster confirmed O'Connell's situation in light of speculation that he was to undergo surgery.

A statement said: "Paul O'Connell is undergoing treatment for a lower back complaint. His treatment is progressing satisfactorily. He will see a specialist for further review in the New Year."
