South Africa captain Jean de Villiers could be out of action for eight months and is a doubt for next year's World Cup.

De Villiers left the field on a stretcher in the 58th minute of the Springboks' 12-6 loss to Wales in Cardiff on Saturday after falling awkwardly at a ruck.

Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts revealed De Villiers dislocated his knee cap and damaged his ligaments.

“We are currently consulting with the best specialists in South Africa to determine the best way to approach the surgery as there are potentially a few options available," he said in a statement.

“It’s imperative that the best course of action is decided on so that Jean can start recovery and rehabilitation as soon as possible to give him the best chance to be fit for the World Cup.

“At this stage it’s still difficult to determine how long he will be out of action, but it would probably be at least eight months.”

The 33-year-old centre has a history of problems with his left knee and has previously had surgery on it.

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer expressed concerns that his experienced skipper, who has played more than 100 Tests, might now be a doubt for the World Cup, which is 10 months away in September, saying "I am quite worried about Jean."
