New Zealand coach Steve Hansen was left unimpressed after his side's run of 16 Test wins ended with an 18-18 draw against Australia in Brisbane.

Dan Carter, who scored all of the All Blacks points with six penalties, had a chance to win it deep into injury time but his drop-goal attempt drifted wide.

"It was probably one of the ugliest games of rugby I've seen," said Hansen.

"We're really, really disappointed, too many avoidable penalties, too many avoidable mistakes.

"But to play as poorly as we did and still manage to show the character and tenacity to get the draw was pleasing. It's not the end of the world but there's enough pain and hurt in the dressing room to make sure we learn the lessons from it."

Australia coach Robbie Deans, whose injury-depleted team led 15-6 at one point, rued a missed opportunity.

"I expect the boys will be pretty disappointed because that's a game we could have won," said Deans.

"But to put ourselves in the position to win their game and to hold that All Blacks side try-less is a significant achievement."
