Former Newport Gwent Dragons lock Hoani Macdonald was stable in an induced coma after collapsing on the pitch during a domestic rugby match in New Zealand.

Macdonald suffered a suspected heart attack 15 minutes into the game between Southland and Counties-Manukau in the North Island town of Pukekohe.

He received CPR treatment from medical staff for more than five minutes before being taken to hospital.

"Macdonald was taken by ambulance from ECOLight Stadium to Middlemore Hospital," a New Zealand Rugby Union statement said.

"He has been put in an induced coma and is stable."

Macdonald, 34, is a former junior All Black who has also played for New Zealand Maori and in Super Rugby for Otago Highlanders and Melbourne Rebels.

He played for Newport Gwent Dragons in what is now the RaboDirect Pro12 for two years from 2008.
