Australia have made three changes to their line-up for the second Test against France in Melbourne on Saturday with calls for Tatafu Polota-Nau, James Horwill and Ben McCalman.

Waratahs hooker Polota-Nau comes into the side in place of captain Stephen Moore, who has a knee injury, while former skipper Horwill replaces Sam Carter (ankle) in the second row and McCalman takes over for Wycliff Palu (ankle) at No 8.

The Wallabies will be led by Michael Hooper, who will become one of his country's youngest captains after being Australia's rookie of the year in 2012.

Hooper takes the reins at the age of 22 with Moore out for the rest of the year with a cruciate knee ligament injury - not since great Trevor Allan became a 21-year-old skipper in 1947 has an Australian Test rugby team been led by a younger player.

Pleased

Three further players are in line to make their Test debut on Saturday with Western Force hooker Nathan Charles and Melbourne Rebels pair Laurie Weeks and Luke Jones selected on Ewen McKenzie's bench.

Australia won the first Test 50-23 in Brisbane but McKenzie warned his side France will be a wounded opponent with plenty to prove, and he urged them to continue their own improvement.

"France is one of the few one teams in the world who can make a lot of changes and still turn things around quickly in one week," he said.

"They never stay down for long and will be using the disappointment of the opening Test to motivate them for the second game.

"We were pleased with our performance on a short preparation but we understand that we must improve if we're going to match a reinvigorated and desperate French line-up on Saturday night."

Australia: Folau, Ashley-Cooper, Kuridrani, Toomua, Cummins, Foley, White; Slipper, Polota-Nau, Kepu, Simmons, Horwill, Fardy, Hooper (capt), McCalman.

Replacements: Charles, Cowan, Weeks, Jones, Higginbotham, Phipps, Beale, McCabe.
