Australia coach Robbie Deans says he is unsure about his future after his side were thumped 41-16 in the deciding Test against the British and Irish Lions.

The New Zealander's tenure has been a topic of constant discussion, despite his record 74-Test, five-year stint, and he admits any decision on his future is now out of his hands.

"You don't presume anything in this industry," said Deans. "Those decisions are made by others, and who knows?"

The Wallabies open their Rugby Championship campaign at home to New Zealand on 17 August and despite the series defeat to the Lions, Deans believes they can mount a serious challenge.

"I've got no doubt the boys will regroup," he said. "(The Rugby Championship) is a different competition and a different circumstance. It's a completely different tournament.

"There's no doubt these blokes will respond, they're too good a side not to."

Wallabies' skipper James Horwill gave short shrift to questions about Deans's future as coach.

He said: "Robbie's the coach. He's contracted, he's the coach. He's a great coach and now's not the time to time to talk about it.

"We'll review everything at the end after this. Five minutes after I've played a Test match is not the time to talk about coaching positions."
