Controversial Wallabies fly-half Quade Cooper has rejected a contract offer by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) and may now pursue a career in Europe or switch to rugby league.

Cooper has not played for Australia since describing the team environment as "toxic" - a comment which led the ARU to fine him the equivalent of around £25,000.

The New Zealand-born No 10 has reportedly rejected a low incentive-based contract, and could now switch to the lucrative French Top 14 competition or to the National Rugby League in Australia.

Cooper, 24, spent most of last Super Rugby season recovering at Queensland Reds from the surgery required after a knee injury sustained in the World Cup third/fourth placed play-off.

He was not in the Australia tour party for their European tour after requiring more knee surgery, but the ARU insisted they had no knowledge of his decision to quit international rugby.

A union spokesman said: "The ARU has had no communication with Quade or his management regarding the speculation.

"Questions regarding Quade's future are a matter best addressed by Quade's management."
