Australia's Will Genia will miss the remainder of the Rugby Championship after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Saturday.

The Wallabies' stand-in skipper was injured during the 26-19 win over South Africa.

Scans at a Perth hospital on Sunday confirmed the injury which will keep the scrum-half sidelined for around six months.

It is the latest in a long line of injury setbacks for the Wallabies, who have already lost regular captain James Horwill and David Pocock ,whose hamstring and knee problems respectively have also ruled both players out for the remainder of the tournament.

Genia will be replaced for next Saturday's match against Argentina on the Gold Coast by veteran half-back Brett Sheehan.

Genia, the 24-year-old Queensland Reds' star, is unlikely to return to action until the start of next year's Super 15 season. He said: "I took the high ball, it twisted and I heard a few cracks."

Nathan Sharpe is expected to be handed the captaincy for the game against the Pumas.
