Australia captain James Horwill may have to wait until 2013 until he makes his return to action after undergoing surgery on his hamstring.

The Reds lock had already been ruled out for the rest of the season after tearing his right hamstring during the victory over the Brumbies in May.

The 27-year-old had initially hoped to be fit in time for November tour to Europe, however he is now unlikely to play again until the next Super Rugby season.

A statement from the Australian Rugby Union read: "Although surgery is now the action, it is not expected to significantly alter the timeline for Horwill's return to playing duties.

"While there is still some hope that Horwill may recover in time to feature on the Qantas Wallabies tour in November, it is more likely that he will not be ready to return until next year's Fx Pro Super Rugby competition."
