Sale winger Mark Cueto believes last Friday's win over Exeter Chiefs is more important than his personal achievement of clinching the all-time Premiership try scoring record.

Cueto broke former team-mate Steve Hanley's record with his 76th try on Friday, although London Wasps winger Tom Varndell is hot on his heels with 71.

"I don't want to be clichéd but the win is the biggest thing," Cueto told BBC Radio Manchester.

"But it's nice and it's one of those great things that I'll probably look back on in a year of two when I've finished and it'll be a great achievement.

"I think Tom Varndell will probably break it before I retire but it's brilliant."

Sale's 21-16 victory over Exeter was only their third Premiership victory of the season, and they remain five points clear of safety following London Irish's victory over Saracens.

Cueto felt the club have gained confidence following their recent success in the LV Cup but admitted they still have a lot of work to do, especially as they face fellow strugglers London Welsh this weekend.

He said: "The confidence and belief was there [against Exeter] from the past two weeks.

"Although it was in the LV it was still massive for the club to get those results and it's three wins on the bounce.

"If we can forget about what happened in the first part of this season and we've got to take the confidence and belief from those three games.

"We're still not out of trouble and we'll go down to Welsh next week needing another win."
