Steve Diamond is hopeful that Brian Redpath will be "back on board" at Sale on Wednesday, despite being relieved of his position of director of rugby.

The former Gloucester boss has paid the price for the Sharks failing to win any of their first seven games in the Aviva Premiership, though that doesn't mean his time with the club is already at an end.

Chief executive Diamond will take overall charge for the rest of the campaign with Redpath - who only arrived in the summer after leaving Kingsholm - offered the opportunity to stay on as backs/attack coach.

"There's been no firing," Diamond told Sky Sports. "We are having a re-structure. We have lost seven games out of seven in the league - if you were running any other business and you were a third of the way through the year and you're losing money then you make changes.

"That's what we're doing. We're tinkering around to get the communication right, the coaching right and, ultimately, get the team to perform as best as we can on Friday night."

On his relationship with Redpath, he added: "We are both sensible people and we both understand that the club is the most important thing.

"Getting a performance on a Friday night is more important than how Brian and I feel.

"We get on really well. There has been no mention of a sacking whatsoever. Hopefully in the next few hours, certainly in the morning, he'll be back on board and we'll be preparing for London Irish."

Mitchell role

Diamond was also quick to dismiss the possibility of John Mitchell taking over as director of rugby later in the season.

The former New Zealand coach is currently working for the Golden Lions but will arrive at Sale in a consultancy role once his contract in South Africa has expired.

"The situation with John is that he's agreed when he's finished in South Africa that he will come as a consultant until the end of the season," Diamond added.

"That's the way it's staying at the moment."
