Schalk Burger: Out of the first three weeks of the Super Rugby season

South Africa flanker Schalk Burger has been ruled out of the first three weeks of Super Rugby after his comeback from a long-term knee injury was delayed again.

The Stormers has been out of action since last February and will miss the Super Rugby season opener against the Bulls in Pretoria on Friday.

Burger injured his knee in the first 20 minutes of last season's Super Rugby opener, which ended his 2012 campaign.

He was expected to return in time for the start of this season's competition but his comeback has been delayed due to a calf muscle tear.

"At this stage of the season I don't want to risk it," said coach Allister Coetzee. "We will leave it until after the Chiefs game, when we have our bye, before we reassess when Schalk may be ready to return."
