Lions flanker Michael Rhodes has been banned for six weeks for his dangerous tackle on Highlanders winger Siale Piutau.
Rhodes appeared at a hearing on Tuesday and was suspended by judicial officer Nick Davidson, who found that Rhodes' wrestling tackle on Piutau at a ruck placed the winger "at serious risk of injury".
Rhodes' ban rules him out of the Johannesburg-based outfit's remaining matches this season against the Hurricanes and the Sharks.
Piutau was also cited for punching Rhodes in retaliation but he has escaped suspension.
Davidson explained: "Whilst the player admitted to foul play he had been seriously compromised in the incident involving Rhodes.
"Piutau's reaction was that of someone who had been seriously endangered (and) to impose a sanction in these circumstances would not reflect the effect on Piutau of the incident and a reaction that was the product of shock rather than retaliatory intent."
