Colin Slade will take the place of the injured Dan Carter in New Zealand's squad for the Rugby Championship.

Fly-half Carter will miss at least the first two matches of the tournament after suffering a fractured bone in his lower leg playing for the Canterbury Crusaders in the Super Rugby final on Saturday.

Slade was overlooked by coach Steve Hansen for his original selection but will now have a chance to compete with Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett, although a place on the bench looks to be his only hope.

The 26-year-old has played only 11 Tests since his debut in 2010, with his international career often put on hold be injury, including two broken jaws.

But he impressed for the Crusaders this season, taking the chance to shine with Carter on a sabbatical which only recently came to an end.
