Newcastle have bolstered their pack with the signing of experienced Samoa international Kane Thompson.

The powerhouse lock, who can also slot in at No 8, will make the switch to Kingston Park from Super Rugby outfit the Chiefs.

Thompson has been capped 28 times - appearing at the 2007 and 2011 World Cups – has had previous spells at Wellington, Southland, Hawke’s Bay, Highlanders, Dax and Canon Eagles.

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said “Kane is a proven operator at the highest levels of rugby in the Southern Hemisphere and has down very well internationally for Samoa.

“We have really liked what we have seen of him and expect that the supporters will too and fully anticipate he will repeat what he has done all the way throughout his career and establish himself as a key member of the squad.”
