Wasps centre Chris Bell has been forced to retire with immediate effect because of a shoulder injury.

The 32-year-old former Leeds and Sale three-quarter, who led Wasps during the 2013-14 season, made 183 Premiership appearances in a career spanning 14 years.

"At this stage I'm not sure what the future holds", Bell said.

"While it's slightly daunting and a change to professional sport, I look forward to the new challenge ahead."

It is a huge blow for the player who only signed a contract extension five months ago.

Bell said in January: "It's brilliant to sign on again and to be honest it was quite an easy decision for me to make.

"Everything is only getting better at Wasps, and I'd like to play as big a part of that as possible."
