Gloucester have strengthened their front-row resources with the signing of hooker Dan George from London Welsh.

The 26-year-old represented Wales at underage level and captained their U19 side during the IRB World Championships in 2005.

As well as London Welsh, George has previously played for Carmarthen Quins , Llanelli and the Scarlets and is well known to Gloucester director of rugby Nigel Davies.

"Dan's someone I've come across in the past when he was in the Scarlets academy," said Davies. "He's a fairly young hooker who did well last year when he was at London Welsh.

"Hooker is a key position for us and we have to make sure that we have enough plenty of cover of the right quality.

"Huia (Edmonds) is still a bit away from being fit to play, so we have to make sure we have adequate strength-in-depth moving forward."

With Edmonds, Koree Britton and Darren Dawidiuk all under contract for next season, there will be plenty of competition for the No 2 shirt at Kingsholm, but Davies believes George can make an impact.

"Anybody that we bring in, we believe that they're ready to do that," he said. "And, in the right environment, we hope to see them grow and reach their full potential.

"That's our job as coaches and strength and conditioners, to help them be their best from a physical, mental and tactical point of view.

"If we can do that, then Dan will develop within this system and he will really push these guys."
