Gloucester scrum-half Haydn Thomas will be out of action for six weeks after it was confirmed that he had fractured his collarbone against Bayonne on Saturday.

The news came as a huge blow to the 23-year-old Thomas who was expected to fill in while the club's first choice scrum-halves Peter Richards and Simon Amor are on England duty with the senior team and sevens squad respectively.

On the official Gloucester website head coach Dean Ryan (pictured), said: "It's obviously extremely disappointing for Haydn because he had really been pushing for an opportunity.

"With the Six Nations upon us he had a real chance to press that claim but unfortunately for everyone concerned that will not happen now."

Thomas sustained the injury after coming on as a second-half substitute during Gloucester's 32-19 European Cup victory over Bayonne.

The Kingsholm outfit are now struggling to fill the number nine shirt but Richards is expected to return from training with Andy Robinson's England squad in time for Saturday's Guinness Premiership clash with London Irish.
