Challenge Cup: Edinburgh and Newcastle beat Bordeaux and Bucherest in European action

Edinburgh began their European Rugby Challenge Cup campaign with a 15-13 win at Bordeaux Begles, while Newcastle Falcons toppled Bucharest 43-19.

Despite Bordeaux dominating possession, it looked like there would be a scoreless first half at the Stade Andre Moga but two minutes before the interval Lionel Beauxis slotted home a penalty from 40 yards.

Just eight minutes into the second period of the Pool 4 clash and Edinburgh were ahead after Sam Beard broke free of the Bordeaux defence before passing to Tim Visser to touch down.

The conversion was missed and just three minutes later the home side took the lead when Baptiste Serin touched down, with Beauxis adding the extras.

Beauxis produced another successful penalty after 58 minutes, before Tom Heathcote replied with his boot for Edinburgh to set up an intriguing last quarter.

The visitors ramped up the pressure and referee Neil Hennessy awarded them a penalty try with six minutes left, which Heathcote converted.

Elsewhere, Newcastle Falcons were comfortable winners over Romanians Bucharest in Pool 3.

Will Witty got the ball rolling in the opening minute on his senior debut before Lee Smith put them 10-0 up after just four minutes.

Rory Clegg converted and the Falcons increased their lead further when Chris Harris went over after 18 minutes.

Clegg added the extras again, before the visitors registered their first try through Florin Ionita, converted by Luke Samoa.

Newcastle showed their superiority just two minutes later when Mark Wilson touched down, while tries either side of the break from Tom Penny added gloss to the home side's total.

Ionut Botezatu scored two tries in the second half for the visitors, but they could not come close to matching the Falcons, who scored the final try of the match through replacement David Nelson 12 minutes from time.
