Northampton Saints have been boosted by the news that Sean Lamont has penned a new deal ahead of the Guinness Premiership opening weekend.

Lamont has become a fixture in Saints' starting line-up after a season that saw him impress for club and country.

A brace of tries helped Scotland stun France in the Six-Nations, while seven touchdowns on the domestic scene did not do justice to the winger's impact in his first year at Franklin's Gardens.

Striking up a lethal back line that features Ben Cohen, Bruce Reihana, and Carlos Spencer, Lamont helped Northampton squeeze into this season's Heineken Cup, and boss Phil Grayson was delighted to hand him a new contract.

"Monty was a vital part of the side last season and did really well for us, working tirelessly without perhaps scoring as many tries as he would have liked," Grayson said of the three-year deal.

"We are delighted that he will be staying with us at Franklin's Gardens as I believe there's much more to come from him."

At 25 years of age, Lamont is approaching his peak years, and he looks in good shape ahead of Saints' opener against Newcastle Falcons, scoring two tries in a recent friendly against Treviso.
