Italy coach Jacques Brunel believes his side's victory over Ireland in their final Six Nations match demonstrates the big progress they are making.

The Italians secured a 22-15 victory over the Irish at the Stadio Olympico on Saturday, which was their first in the fixture since joining the tournament in 2000.

Wing Giovambattista Venditti burrowed over for the game's only try in the 49th minute, but Italy could have finished with several more and were grateful that Luciano Orquera and Gonzalo Garcia had brought their kicking boots.

The victory was Italy's second of the championship following their opening day victory over France. And having pushed England and Wales hard in defeat, Brunel is pleased with his side's development over the tournament.

"With this victory we showed we were capable of producing some continuity," he said.

"We've shown a good level to our game in this Six Nations. We are a work in progress, but we have shown character and spirit.

"At times there was a lot of composure to our game and that shows we are on the right track."
