2012 could well be the year that Italy throw down a serious marker to the rest of Europe's top-tier nations.
An historic win over France last year will have lifted the spirits of the Azzurri while they pushed Australia and Ireland hard at the World Cup.
Italy stats
Coach: Jacques Brunel
Captain: Sergio Parisse
Key man - Sergio Parisse: He is by far and away the stand-out player in the Italy squad. Parisse has the ability to make things happen for the Azzurri and his influence flows through the side. Expect to see him covering every blade of grass during the tournament.
Prediction: Once again the tournament underdogs, Italy have the daunting prospect of playing three of their five games away. However they have the potential to cause life uncomfortable for any side, with Scotland their most likely scalp. Joint 5th
New coach Jacques Brunel has replaced Nick Mallett at the helm and he believes he could transform Italy into title contenders within two years.
That will be a massive ask for the Italians, even if they do boast a world-class pack - spearheaded by Sergio Parisse.
As strong as they are up front, Italy are short of quality in the backs - despite Andrea Masi's success last season - while they also lack an accurate goalkicker.
Aironi prop Alberto De Marchi, Crociati centre Luca Morisi, Aironi winger Giovambattista Venditti and 18-year-old winger Angelo Esposito are all new faces in the squad - although 22 of those that went to the World Cup remain.
The inclusion of Aironi and Treviso has helped with the national side's development - and there is no doubt England and Scotland will not relish their trips to Rome.
Unfortunately they will play three games on the road - and they will have to produce something special if they are to win in Paris, Dublin or Cardiff.
