Wales skipper Sam Warburton will undergo shoulder surgery next week and is likely to miss "several months" of action.

Warburton suffered a dislocated shoulder against Scotland during the closing stages of Saturday's record-breaking 51-3 win in Wales' final Six Nations clash of the campaign.

The Cardiff Blues flanker will now miss Wales' summer tour of South Africa and the rest of the RaboDirect Pro12 season after it was confirmed he would undergo surgery this week.

The British and Irish Lions forward joins Wales team-mate Leigh Halfpenny on the sidelines, after the full-back had successful surgery on his shoulder last week.

"Following MRI scans and consultations with specialists, Warburton will have an operation and is expected to miss several months of action," said a statement on the Blues website.

"Everybody at Cardiff Blues wishes Sam and Leigh all the best during their rehabilitation."

Wales coach Warren Gatland revealed following the Millennium Stadium clash that Warburton's shoulder was dislocated and he feared the worst.

"He's not very good," admitted Gatland. "It looks like he's dislocated his shoulder; they had to put it back in after the game."
