Ulster and Ireland lock Dan Tuohy has been ruled out for up to eight weeks to repair a torn ligament in his thumb.

Touhy suffered the injury during last Sunday’s PRO12 win in Treviso and will undergo surgery on Wednesday morning.

The 29-year-old has made just nine appearances for Ulster this season, having missed almost three months with an arm injury earlier in the campaign.

Tuohy will miss the start of Ireland’s Six Nations campaign, which begins against Italy in Rome on February 7.

Ulster also confirmed that Ireland centre Luke Marshall suffered a concussion in training last week and is now observing return to play protocols.

It is the fifth concussion the 23-year-old has sustained since March 2013, and he also had a spell on the sidelines with a knee ligament injury earlier this season.

Ulster travel to two-time European champions Toulon in the Rugby Champions Cup this weekend and they will also be without the services of Wiehahn Herbst, who suffered a hamstring injury against Treviso.
