Ireland captain Jamie Heaslip was left ruing his side's failures in the set-piece as they slumped to their first Six Nations defeat to Italy.

Italy made a mess of Ireland's lineout with Irish losing 45% of their own throw-ins while Luciano Orquera punished the Irish for conceding too many penalties.

The Italy fly-half kicked four penalties as well as converting Giovanbattista Venditti's try while Gonzalo Garcia also landed a penalty.

Ireland, operating on limited possession, failed to breach the Italian line with all of their points coming from the boot of fly-half Paddy Jackson.

And Heaslip was disappointed with his side's discipline early on and their inability to secure the platform to attack the Italians.

"We gave away too many easy shots at goal and also turned over a lot of ball at the set piece. They cut us off at source," Heaslip said.

"The set-piece is a big launching platform for any team, so to lose that was frustrating. But we were still in it until the end, despite the injuries."
