Scotland assistant coach Duncan Hodge is reading nothing into Samoa's heavy defeat on Saturday ahead of their meeting in South Africa next weekend.

Samoa began their tour of South Africa in forgettable fashion as they crashed to a 74-14 defeat against the Lions at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Hodge went straight to that match after Scotland landed in Durban but he said there were plenty of factors against the Pacific Islanders that mean his team should be taking nothing for granted.

Scotland needed a dramatic late converted try from debutant Rob Harley to claim a 17-16 victory over the Samoans last June and they went on to beat eventual Six Nations winners Wales.

Huge task

Hodge said: "It was worthwhile (going to the game), it just confirmed a lot of what we knew. It was pretty tough for Samoa playing at altitude.

"They have got anywhere between nine and 12 players still to arrive over today and tomorrow, so it will be a much much different team come Saturday and will be a huge task for us.

"I think they're ranked seventh in the world and if you look at their games in the autumn they pushed France extremely close and beat Wales pretty comfortably.

"They've got players playing all over Europe, French cup finals, big players at big clubs with big experience. They are an absolutely quality team."
