Newcastle Falcons prop Grant Shiells has been drafted into Scotland's training squad to ease their troubles in the front row.

Three of the four props named in Andy Robinson's initial 34-man party are currently nursing injuries, prompting a call-up for the 23-year-old.

Ryan Grant suffered a head knock in Glasgow Warriors' match at Treviso at the weekend, while Allan Jacobsen (hamstring) and Geoff Cross (concussion) are returning to fitness.

"We've invited Grant to train with us given some of the recent injuries we've had on both sides of the front row," said Robinson.

Grant, Jacobsen and Cross are all expected to be fit in time for the clash with New Zealand at Murrayfield on 11 November.

However, the front row remains a concern with four props required in the matchday squad and Kyle Traynor is the only fit prop at present.

Other injury concerns in the pack include locks Jim Hamilton (ribs), Al Kellock (back) and Richie Gray (ankle) and flanker Ross Rennie (shoulder).

In the backs, stand-offs Ruaridh Jackson (shoulder) and Greig Laidlaw (neck), centre Nick De Luca (ankle) and wing/centre Sean Lamont (facial) are also doubtful.
