Six Nations: New trophy created for 2015 champions

The winners of the Six Nations Championship will lift a new trophy this year, only the second one since 1883 to be created for the competition.

The new trophy replaces the 1993 edition, which is being retired as it represented the nations that took part in the pre-millennium Five Nations Championship.

In 2000 the addition of Italy to the Championship - alongside England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales - marked the beginning of the current format.

Each competing nation has its crest engraved on the six-sided trophy, along with the year they joined the Championship.

Made from 7kg of silver, it stands at 75cm high and is adorned with a gold-plated '6' in both handles and a rugby ball and crown device on the lid finial.

John Feehan, chief executive of Six Nations Rugby, said: "We are delighted with the new RBS Six Nations trophy. We are looking forward to presenting it to the successful captain on the final weekend of the 2015 Championship."
