England Under-20s staged a superb second-half fightback to claim the IRB Junior World Championship title with a 23-15 win over Wales.

Wales had led 15-3 at half-time - courtesy of two tries from Ashley Evans and the boot of Sam Davies - and then spent 10-minute spell camped on the England line after the break.

However England regrouped to finally see off the challenge of Wales with tries from Jack Nowell and Sam Hill, while Henry Slade added 13 points.

And the win means England, who beat Wales to claim the Six Nations crown, lift the title at last after losing to New Zealand in their last three appearances in the final.

Wales got off to the ideal start when a pinpoint chip across the field from the left boot of Davies found Evans for the opening try.

England replied with a three-pointer from Slade, only for Davies to restore his side's advantage with a long-range penalty.

And Wales put themselves clear as Evans intercepted Alec Hepburn's pass to race away for a try. Davies converted.

Pressure

Jordan Williams had to be alert to deny Ben Howard, though, as England pushed for a way back.

England thought they had scored when Price went over on the stroke of half-time after an extended spell of pressure. However the try was disallowed for an earlier incident at the breakdown, with Dominic Barrow shown the yellow card.

Down to 14-men for the start of the second half, England had to weather the storm as Wales looked to put the game beyond doubt. But their failure to add to their tally would ultimately prove crucial.

Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi had a score chalked off after the replacement England prop was penalised for not releasing after being tackled.

However England were finally awarded a try on 56 minutes when Nowell broke through the Welsh defence to score. Slade converted to cut the deficit to five.

Slade missed a penalty however he made no mistake with the conversion after Hill powered over.

Slade edged England further ahead with another penalty before the Exeter fly-half slotted over a three-pointer in the dying minutes to seal the win.
