Only Samoa, Kenya and Australia finished with 100 per cent records after opening day of the fourth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series - with Fiji failing to make the last-eight of the main competition for the first time in 14 years.

France, who are currently second in the series standings, also failed to make it through - while New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina only just progressed.

England defied their recent poor form to reach the quarter-finals for the first time this season - with a thrilling 19-14 win over the hosts setting them on their way.

The return of Mat Turner and playmaker Christian Lewis-Pratt proved vital as England finished day one unbeaten.

Turner, last season's leading try-scorer, crossed twice in the win over New Zealand, with Dan Norton crossing for his 106th career try.

Turner added to his tally in the 12-12 draw with the USA and then scored again in the 28-5 win over Spain. Lewis-Pratt also scored against the Americans, while Marcus Watson, Tom Powell and Sam Edgerley finished the job against the Spaniards.

Scotland booked their place after shocking Fiji 14-12, thanks to tries from Michael Fedo and Andrew Turnbull, while they edged out Portugal 19-17. Only Australia denied them a clean sweep when they won the pool decider 24-5.

Wales missed out on the last eight by virtue of points difference, with their loss against South Africa having been crucial.

Wales had beaten Canada 26-17 in their opening match, but they were beaten by pool winners Samoa 19-10. Having lost to Canada (26-15) and Samoa (19-10), South Africa were on the verge of missing out - however a 21-0 victory over Wales saw them clinch their place in the main competition.
