England captain Chris Robshaw felt his side paid the price for not taking their chances in the 20-14 defeat to Australia at Twickenham.

The home side went into the match full of confidence after putting a half-century of points on Fiji the previous weekend, while their opponents had suffered a 33-6 mauling at the hands of France.

However the Wallabies took their opportunities to come out on top, Nick Cummins scoring their only try with Berrick Barnes booting the rest of their points, the full-back slotting over four penalties and a drop goal.

England also crossed through Manu Tuilagi in the first half but although they dominated possession and territory in the closing stages, they were unable to breach Australia's defensive line again.

"We weren't clinical enough today," Robshaw told Sky Sports. "We had some great chances and squandered a couple of points, we knocked one over the line.

"We need to be clinical when you play the best teams. If you get one chance you need to take it, and unfortunately we didn't do that today."

"Credit to them - they attacked well from everywhere," he added. "We expected that, we expected the unexpected. They came here and did a job.

"We need to go away, look at our game and see where we lost points."

Robshaw also stood by his decision not to go for goal with several penalties in the second half, turning down the opportunity to get three points on the board to instead attempt to score a try.

From one such instance Thomas Waldrom thought he had crossed, only for the TMO to correctly rule out the score as the Leicester forward had knocked on in his attempt to ground the ball.

"We scored a try once, and then unfortunately we got turned over another time," Robshaw added. "You need to make sure that if you do go (for a tap penalty), you come away with points."
