Sir Clive Woodward added his name to the list of supporters for Stuart Lancaster after he was confirmed as England head coach.

Woodward is currently director of sport at the British Olympic Association and was linked with an elite performance role at Twickenham last year.

But he believes Lancaster is the right man to take England forward during an exciting period for sport in the UK.

"The performance of the England team during the recent Six Nations Championship demonstrated great progress and I wish Stuart and his team continued success.

"The London 2012 Olympics is the start of an exciting series of major sporting events taking place in the UK during the coming years, representing a golden opportunity for British sport.

"Here at the British Olympic Association we are very aware of the significance of enthusiastic home support and I am sure Stuart and his team will enjoy England rugby supporters' full backing going forward towards the Rugby World Cup in 2015 on home soil."

Several England players have backed the decision to appoint Lancaster, with flanker and captain Chris Robshaw, handed the leadership role for the Six Nations by the new head coach, one of the first to pledge support.

"I would like to congratulate Stuart on his appointment not just on my behalf but also on behalf of all the players that worked with him in England's Six Nations squad," he said.

"In all his dealings with that squad during the Six Nations Stuart displayed a real empathy with the players, earning their respect and trust, and a vision for how he wanted England to play. The players responded to him and the results are there for all to see.

"I was privileged to be asked by him to captain the team in the Championship and look forward to working with him in the future if I am selected."
