Minnows upset the odds

Despite being handed a daunting pool for the fourth leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series, Tonga came through in style as they held Wales to a 14-14 draw before toppling Argentina and Fiji.

And Canada joined them in the last eight after they stunned France 19-14 before beating Kenya 21-14. Australia denied them a clean sweep but the Wallabies failed to progress after losing to France and Kenya.

Tonga's reward is a quarter-final tie against England, while Canada will tackle Samoa, who finished as runners up to New Zealand in Pool A.

England booked their place in the knockout stages after finishing second in Pool B. Ben Ryan's men beat the Cook Islands and the USA before losing 14-10 to South Africa.

The Blitzbokke will now face Fiji, who saw off the challenge of Argentina and Wales, while the final last-eight game sees New Zealand take on France.

Scotland and Wales will have to settle for places in the Bowl competition after frustrating days.

Scotland, two-time Bowl winners this season, lost to New Zealand and Samoa before they thrashed Japan 55-0.

Wales, who had fancied their chances in Wellington after impressing during the opening three legs of the Series, beat Argentina but the draw to Tonga and loss to Fiji cost them.

Scotland will face a Kenyan side buoyed by their shock 35-10 rout of Australia, while Wales will tackle the USA.
