Captain Katy Mclean dedicated her side's victory in the Women's Rugby World Cup final to the whole of the England rugby family.

A defeat against Canada would have seen England finish as runners-up in the competition for a fourth straight time, but a 21-9 victory in Paris allowed them to avoid that fate.

And after the win - England’s second in the tournament's history after their 1994 triumph - Mclean was quick to pay tribute to both the players and the backroom staff.

"That group of girls and that staff deserve everything that we've got today. We've worked so hard for this," the fly-half told Sky Sports.

"There are so many great legends that have gone before and haven't won (the World Cup) in an England shirt. This is all about the England rugby family - it's amazing."

She added: "It started years ago with the people that have brought us here and out family and friends that have helped us.

'Amazing'

"We had to work hard today – Canada were fantastic. It's just absolutely amazing to think we've done it."

Emily Scarratt was the difference-maker for England, scoring 11 points from the kicking tee and a late try which ended any hopes of a Canada comeback.

Mclean said of the centre: "She's a phenomenal player – world class players need a world class stage. That's what she got today and she delivered for England."

England 2003 World Cup heroes Lawrence Dallaglio and Richard Hill were among many past and present international stars to praise the achievement of Mclean, Scarratt and company.

"Fantastic result for (England) women, and well-deserved after all the hard work! What an inspirational team!" former England captain Dallaglio said on Twitter.

His former back-row colleague Richard Hill tweeted: "Congratulations ladies. A proud day. I'm sure Tuesday training sessions feel worth it now!"

There were also tributes on Twitter from current England stars such as Mike Brown, Danny Care and Tom Croft.
