Dan Carter returns to the New Zealand side for Saturday's Rugby Championship clash with Argentina in La Plata.

The fly-half, fit after a calf injury, replaces Aaron Cruden in one of two changes to their starting XV from the team that beat South Africa 21-11.

Cruden is named among the All Blacks' replacements along with Piri Weepu, who loses the No 9 shirt to Aaron Smith.

Smith was dropped against the Springboks as punishment for breaching team rules but he came off the bench and was very effective.

The only other change was to the forwards bench, where flanker Sam Cane appears in his first matchday 22 in the tournament.

"We have huge respect for the Pumas, who have shown in the tournament just how good they are, and we are expecting even more from them this weekend as they are playing at home in front of their passionate fans," coach Steve Hansen said.

New Zealand: Dagg; Jane, C Smith, Nonu, Savea; Carter, Smith; Woodcock, Hore, Franks, Romano, Whitelock, Messam, McCaw (capt), Read

Replacements: Mealamu, Faumuina, Retallick, Cane, Weepu, Cruden, B Smith.
