Kurtley Beale will make his first Test start at fly-half for Australia in today's Rugby Championship clash with South Africa.

Beale replaces Quade Cooper in the No 10 shirt in Pretoria, with the Reds playmaker ruled out by a knee injury.

Berrick Barnes will start at full-back and assume the kicking duties, with lock Nathan Sharpe keeping the captaincy of a side hit hard by absentees.

Sharpe will play his 110th Test at Loftus Versfeld, equaling George Smith's record for a Wallaby forward.

"Although his season hasn't been without challenge, Kurtley stepped up with his involvements on the Gold Coast, making a difference when he was on the field," said coach Robbie Deans said.

"He's brought that enthusiasm forward with him since we've been in South Africa, has worked hard on the training track and is excited about the opportunity ahead."

Australia: Barnes, Shipperley, Ashley-Cooper, McCabe, Ioane, Beale, Phipps; Robinson, Polota Nau, Alexander, Douglas, Sharpe (capt), Dennis, Hooper, Samo. Replacements: S Fainga'a, Slipper, Simmons, Higginbotham, Gill, Sheehan, A Fainga'a
