Western Force have confirmed the signing of Australia international Hugh McMeniman from Japanese club Kubota Spears.

The 28-year-old lock, who has been capped 21 times, has been playing in Japan for the past three years since leaving the Reds.

However McMeniman, who can also play in the back row, has now opted to return to Australia to play for the Perth-based franchise.

"Hugh is a player of the highest calibre," said Force head coach Michael Foley. "Having seen his performances in Japan, he's lost nothing since he's been gone.

"He's very powerful in his general play, and, importantly, he's a player that will drive standards within the squad."

McMeniman is hoping that his move to the Force will kick-start his international career - with his last appearance for the Wallabies coming against Wales in November 2008.

"My first priority is having a good season with the Force but in the back of my mind is that goal of working my way back into the Wallaby side," he said.

"But first of all it's about getting through pre-season and building a base to hopefully be selected for that starting side for the Force."
