Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall has backed Owen Farrell to return as England’s No 10.

Farrell started a fly-half in England’s narrow defeats to New Zealand and South Africa but was moved to centre for their win over Samoa before being dropped to the bench against Australia.

McCall admitted the player was out-of-sorts but was in complete faith that his player can return for England ahead of the Six Nations.

He’s unbelievably phlegmatic, he deals with these things incredibly well.

“He’s unbelievably phlegmatic, he deals with these things incredibly well,” he said. “Everyone knows he was a bit rusty going into the autumn series, he only played one game for us.

“He’s going to play a lot of rugby for us over the next couple of months and hopefully going into the Six Nations, with him and George Ford eyeing for that position, he will have a lot more rugby under his belt.”

Farrell has admitted in the past that he needs to sharpen his game, and will now focus his attention to Saturday’s clash against Sale for the Saracens – live in Sky Sports 2.

McCall underlined the importance of taking care of his players ahead of the game, and said Farrell’s belief was one of the fly-half’s greatest attributes.

“Every player wants to be supported,” he said. “The coaches and I will always talk to every player.

“But he has a strong mind of his own which is a huge strength of his and he’ll be looking forward to playing for us this weekend."
