Saracens hooker Schalk Brits has been ruled out until "well into the new year" after suffering a knee injury in Saturday’s victory over Clermont Auvergne.

The South African sustained a knee ligament injury in the second half of Sarries’ 30-23 victory in the new European Rugby Champions Cup.

"Schalk is due to have surgery and will then commence rehabilitation with the club's medical staff," head of medicine Joe Collins told the club website on Monday.

"Brits is not expected to return until well into the new year."

The 33-year-old, who has made more than 100 Premiership appearances for Saracens, will undergo surgery on Tuesday and some reports suggest there is a chance he could be out for the rest of the season.

The news is a major blow to Saracens, for whom Brits has been an important player for years.
